They have been selected out of the large number available by careful trialling in the "Allsun Farm" vegetable gardens.

These hoes are all light, easy-to-use and can be sharpened for added accuracy.

Hoeing is one job which many gardeners dislike but with the choice of the appropriate implement, and good timing, much of the druggery can be eliminated.

All long handled hoes need to be tailored to the individual user. The ideal length of handle is one that brings the total tool length to between the nose and the mouth with both the tool and the user standing upright. If it's too long don't be afraid to cut off any extra after all it's just extra weight you have to carry around.

We wish it was still easy to post you handles as well however they are now readily available from the major hardware chains like Magnet Mart, Bunnings and Mitre 10. Contact us if you need several handles because we can arrange courier delivery of bundles of 5.

LONG HANDLED HO-MI

Long Handled Ho-Mi in Use

The blade of this hoe is hand forged

The shape is an ancient Korean design and resembles a small plough.
There are two models available scraper and standard and of the two we find that the scraper works best on a long handle.

These are both very versatile hoes and, depending on the angle they are held at, you can

  • scrape
  • dig
  • hill up soil
  • run a long straight furrow
  • then turn it to fill the furrow in again

Due to numerous breakages in the post we no longer ship the long handled homi, however we do sell a long handled head kit with instructions for mounting on a standard broom handle

GUNG HOE

175mm blade replaceable $47.00 (head only)
100mm blade fixed $35 (head only)
100mm blade replaceable $43 (head only)
Gung Hoe Hoe in use

Our Gung Hoe is an Eliot Coleman designed light cultivating hoe.
It is our personal favourite, indeed it's the best cultivating hoe we have ever tried.

It is a draw hoe not a chopping hoe. A razor not an axe.

To be effective it needs to be used almost before the weeds appear. It is ideal for getting out the small weeds whcih are still at white root stage.
Hold the handle with both thumbs up (as in the picture) and draw it towards you in short, quick, shallow strokes keeping the blade just below the surface of the soil being careful not to cover the weeds you have just cut off.

The larger (175mm) model with a replaceable blade gets a lot of work out at Allsun Farm. It is used with the bevel on the blade facing up and sharpen it often with a fine cut file.
The smaller model is used for precision work in tightly spaced crops like salad greens and garlic.

WIRE WEEDER

French Hoe Hoe in use

Another light cultivating hoe. Like the Gung Hoe the French Wire Weeder is a draw not a chopping hoe, a razor not an axe.
To be effective it needs to be used almost before the weeds appear.
Hold the handle with both thumbs up (as in the picture) and draw it towards you in short, quick, shallow strokes keeping the blade just below the surface of the soil. Works equally well in both right and left hand positions.

OSCILLATING STIRRUP HOES

Oscillating Stirrup Hoe in use

Oscillating Stirrup Hoes are used in a different way in that the hoe handle is held with either both thumbs up (see picture) or for a stronger action with both thumbs down .
They are sturdy and sharp and are used with a push-pull motion which cuts on both the forward and backward stroke using short, quick. shallow strokes just below the surface of the soil.
They come in three different widths to accommodate different row widths. (180 mm, 135 mm, and 85 mm)

The rounded corners of the blades make them forgiving if one is a somewhat careless weeder.

Commercial growers who use these hoes daily find that a blade will last about 12 months
- we carry a full range of replacement blades.
