There was a two week break between lessons 3 and 4, school holidays. The timing on this holiday was perfect because it gave the plants in the garden a chance to grow and an opportunity for the class to see some real reward for the work that they had done.

Overview of garden

The aim of this lesson was to get the children familiar with how you make a map or plan and to get them to make lots of measurements using different pieces of equipment.

Problem 1:

Make a rough drawing of the garden showing:

the outline of the garden beds
the position of crops
position of trees
position of the worm bin

Problem 2:

Use a compass to measure the relationship between the garden beds and true north

Problem 3:

Measure the size of the beds using both tape measures and measuring wheels and then compare the results. The measurements were marked on the rough map.
