Overall this worked out to be a good project in a small rural primary school. The classes were interesting and varied and the children really enjoyed seeing all the plants grow. With the exception of the peas, which were only moderately successful all of the vegetables thrived. On several occasions we went in before school to check on the vegetable garden and do a bit of maintenance work. We were always joined by volunteers who wanted to be involved and to help. A number of parents approached us to find out exactly how to build a worm bin so some of the ideas were being discussed at home. This was very pleasing. The children enjoyed eating the peas and strawberries and had great fun harvesting all the lettuces to take home. Unfortunately neither the garlic or the wheat was ready to harvest by the end of the school year so we went in and collected it during the holidays. It was stored in the school shelter shed until the beginning of the next term and one afternoon the whole school helped to clean and sort it all. ![]() There was never time to make the corn dollies out of the wheat, however the seed has been stored ready for use again in the garden. The older children made braids out of the garlic and it was sold at a school fete for a total of $70. Everyone was thrilled with this and seemed to think that bigger and better was the order of the day for next year!! ![]() |
