LOOKING AFTER
YOURSELF &
YOUR TOOLS

OUR PROMISE IS "IF WE SELL IT, WE USE IT ON THE FARM OURSELVES"

ERGONOMICS - looking after your body
  • All our tools can be used in a body friendly way. We, like you, want to be able to go on working in our gardens until late in life. As a general rule, if you are starting to feel sore or stiff don't go on working until the pain becomes unbearable.

  • Broadfork - always carry the tool at the point of balance which is half to two thirds up one of the legs towards the tines. For detailed instructions on how to use the tool go to our web site.

  • Hoes - these can be tailored to fit individuals. Standing upright, with the hoe close to the body, mark the handle level with the tip of your nose. Any extra length is superfluous - cut it off. Always hoe in an upright position not bent at the waist. Keeping both thumbs up brings the hoe into the correct position. Details on hoeing technique can be found on our web site or in Eliot Coleman's excellent book 'The New Organic Grower'

  • Always take due care when dealing with heavy or sharp objects.

TOOL CARE
  • Do not leave tools out in the weather. After use store them away in a garden shed or garage. Not only will the tools last longer, you will be able to find them easily the next time you want to use them!

  • Oil wooden handles every few months. (Any wood oil is suitable - linseed oil, or a mix like 'Organoil')

  • Never use a tool if any of the nuts and bolts or screws are loose. Using a tool with a loose parts can cause excessive wear.

  • All of our tool range is manufactured to a high standard and is designed for commercial use. If the tools are being used for the job that they are intended for there should be NO NEED FOR EXCESSIVE FORCE to be applied. If you find that any given tool will not do the job you expect it to do, talk to us - we may be able to provide a much more suitable alternative and save you damaging a useful implement.
